Beyond the Tweed: A Tour of Scotland in 1858

One of the first accounts of a trip to Scotland by rail, its author, then a journalist and part-time Prussian diplomat in London, became one of Germany’s most popular writers; his novels combine the charm and wit of Trollope and Jane Austen.

Already something of an Anglophile, Fontane enthusiastically took to Scotland, especially to the stories and legends about Mary, Queen of Scots, though he was not beyond making gentle fun of the already incipient heritage industry and its blood-curdling stories of clan derring-do.

The drawings in the book are by Fontane’s friend Bernhard von Lepel who accompanied him on his trip.

Aimiably written … richly stocked with anecdotes, offers us a fascinating view of the country through foreign eyes’ – Scotland on Sunday

I read and enjoyed every word’ – Richenda Miers, author of the Cadogan Guide to Scotland)

Theodor Fontane (1819–98) is best know for a series of novels written when he was over sixty, including Effi Briest. They are characterized by their strong sense of place, history, social setting, dialogue and conviviality, and have been translated into numerous languages.

Charlotte Jolles (1909–2003) was born in Berlin and emigrated to London in 1939. She taught in schools and at the University of London (Birkbeck College). She was the doyenne of Fontane studies in Germany, and edited and wrote extensively about his work.
