The Bays are Sere (Les lauriers sont coupés) and Interior Monologue

The first novel written entirely in interior monologue, in 1886, The Bays are Sere had a fundamental impact on James Joyce and is a comic masterpiece of failed seduction.

The author (1861–1947) was the founder editor of the Revue Wagnérienne.

reviews

‘no matter how diligently the critics worked to demonstrate that he had borrowed the interior monologue from Freud, Joyce always made it a point of honour that he had it from Dujardin‘

Richard Ellmann (Joyce’s biographer)

‘here is a neglected prime piece of modernism at last rendered properly into English’

Guardian

‘reads beautifully’
