Germany: Jekyll and Hyde

An Eyewitness Analysis of Nazi Germany

… unmatched as a contemporary analysis of the Third Reich. It is quite remarkable that, writing in 1940, he could produce such acute insights into Hitler’s character and political hold over Germany’ – Ian Kershaw

Written with utmost urgency immediately after the outbreak of the Second World War, by a young German émigré lawyer, this vivid book makes the darkest period of the Second World War seem like contemporary history.

Apocryphally, Churchill told his cabinet to read this book so that they would understand the Nazi threat. We should do likewise to understand how close we came to ignoring it’ – Observer

An alarm call trying to awaken the British to the unique nature of Hitler and the Nazi regime … Haffner’s warnings, published before the attack on Russia and, before Auschwitz and total war, are remarkably prescient.’ – J.G. Ballard

Sebastian Haffner (1907–99) was a Berlin lawyer who emigrated to Britain in 1938. He became foreign correspondent of the Observer, before returning to Germany and becoming a distinguished journalist and historian there. Among his other books are Defying Hitler and The Meaning of Hitler.
